NAICC Calls for Merit-Based MAPAAC Commission Appointments
NAICC urges the Michigan Advisory Commission to select Indian American representatives based on demonstrated community service — not political connections or religious affiliation.
On December 19, 2024, NAICC President Dhaval Vaishnav addressed a formal letter to the MAPAAC Commission Appointments Team, calling for fair and merit-based selection of Indian American commissioners.
"The selection of representatives should be based on demonstrable Indian American community contributions and proven service, rather than primarily on political endorsements or state-level affiliations," wrote Vaishnav. "Merit-based selection that transcends religious or personal identifiers will best serve our community's interests."
The letter specifically emphasized that the Indian American community would be best served by representatives who have demonstrated tangible impact through grassroots work with Michigan's Indian American families, rather than selections based on religious affiliations.
"This approach strengthens MAPAAC's credibility and reinforces the shared democratic values that bind the two nations," Vaishnav noted. "Based on my experience with community leadership owing to my active presence, I welcome the opportunity to contribute insights toward strengthening this process and encourage engagement with leaders across all sectors."
NAICC's advocacy for merit-based representation aligns with the organization's broader mission to ensure that Indian American voices in government reflect the diversity and depth of the community they serve.
