NAICC actively champions key issues affecting the North American Indian business community and broader societal interests.
Current advocacy focuses on two pillars: merit-based community representation and supporting small business sustainability through legislative reform. NAICC engages with policymakers at every level to ensure North American Indian voices are heard and acted upon.
NAICC has called for reforms to ensure community representatives are selected based on demonstrated service and tangible contributions, not political connections or identity factors alone. The organization emphasizes fair, inclusive, and merit-based selection processes that reflect genuine community impact.
In December 2024, NAICC President Dhaval Vaishnav wrote formally to the MAPAAC Commission Appointments Team, stating: “The selection of representatives should be based on demonstrable North American Indian community contributions and proven service, rather than primarily on political endorsements or state-level affiliations. Merit-based selection that transcends religious or personal identifiers will best serve our community’s interests.”

With unchanged rates despite rising operational costs, small businesses face significant challenges. The proposed adjustment aims to create sustainable margins and enable business reinvestment.
In a letter to Governor Gretchen Whitmer and State Representatives, NAICC President Vaishnav wrote: “The current 17% discount requirement has remained stagnant despite significant economic changes and mounting operational costs. Small retailers, the cornerstone of Michigan’s economy, face escalating expenses in labor, rent, utilities, insurance, and regulatory compliance, making it increasingly difficult to maintain viable profit margins. House Bill 4757 represents a critical opportunity to address these systemic challenges and foster a more sustainable business environment across Michigan.”
